Breakup Blues centers the moment when a relationship ends: being left, leaving, betrayal, divorce, abandonment, regret or relief. It can be comic, bitter, devastated or hard-headed, but the lyric usually turns on a specific romantic break rather than general loneliness. The music may be classic, country, electric or soul-blues; the defining feature is the singer using blues form to process separation in public.

History

Blues has always treated love as practical, messy and economically real, so breakup songs appeared early in classic blues, country blues and urban blues. Bessie Smith, Tampa Red, Elmore James, B.B. King, Little Milton, Denise LaSalle and Koko Taylor all made parting into performance. Later soul-blues and contemporary blues kept the subject central because adult audiences recognized the mix of pride, pain and survival.
