Breakcore is hyper-fragmented electronic music built from violently chopped breakbeats, extreme tempos, jungle edits, gabber kicks, distortion, absurd samples, digital shredding, and sudden style collisions. It often runs from about 170 BPM upward, but speed alone is not the point; the core sound is breakbeat mutation pushed into overload. It can be comic, brutal, ornate, political, cartoonish, or perversely beautiful.
History
Breakcore grew from jungle, hardcore techno, digital hardcore, gabber, ragga-jungle, industrial noise, and sample collage in the 1990s underground. Alec Empire and Digital Hardcore Recordings helped establish the militant electronic-punk context, while Venetian Snares brought virtuosic rhythmic mutilation, Bong-Ra and Shitmat pushed ragga and mashup chaos, Kid606 linked laptop glitch to punk attitude, Doormouse represented Midwestern absurdity, DJ Scotch Egg added Game Boy violence, and Igorrr later fused breakcore with metal, baroque, and absurdist composition. It influenced mashcore, cybergrind, IDM, deconstructed club, internet rave, and any producer who treats the Amen break like a demolition site.
