Breakbeat Hardcore is early-1990s U.K. rave music where sped-up breakbeats, piano riffs, reggae samples, hoovers, chipmunk vocals, and heavy sub-bass collide. It sits before jungle, happy hardcore, and drum and bass fully separated: the drums are faster and rougher than house, but the tracks still carry rave stabs, pop samples, and warehouse euphoria. The style is chaotic in the best sense, built for pirate radio, white labels, huge raves, and whistles.
History
The style exploded during the U.K. rave boom as producers fused Belgian techno pressure, acid house, hip-hop breaks, reggae bass, and sample-heavy studio tricks. Altern-8, The Prodigy, SL2, Acen, 2 Bad Mice, Urban Shakedown, Blame, Hyper On Experience, and Shut Up and Dance all helped define the period. By 1993-1994, the scene was splintering into jungle, darkside, happy hardcore, and drum and bass, but breakbeat hardcore remains the hinge where rave's most important branches diverged.
