Breakbeat is the broad electronic style based on broken drum loops rather than an even house kick. In practice it can mean chopped funk breaks, rave breaks, electro-bass drums, hip-hop-derived loops, or modern club tracks that keep the snare-and-kick syncopation up front. The term is both a family name and a functional DJ label: if the rhythm feels like a sampled break moving through electronic production, it can sit in the breakbeat lane.
History
Electronic breakbeat grew out of hip-hop DJ practice, sample culture, electro, and U.K. rave. M|A|R|R|S, The KLF, Shut Up and Dance, The Prodigy, and early hardcore producers pulled break loops into club records, while later Freestylers, Plump DJs, Stanton Warriors, Hybrid, and Adam Freeland made breakbeat a self-conscious club genre. The sound's influence is broader than its own scene: jungle, big beat, breakstep, dubstep, breaks, trap, and modern bass music all borrowed from its drum logic.
