Functional audio expressly designed to guide brainwave activity toward target states, weaving binaural beats, isochronic tones or monaural pulses tuned to alpha, theta, delta or gamma ranges into gentle ambient music or nature sounds. The entrainment element is the organizing principle, with soft pads and drones providing a soothing carrier. Production is precise and static, matching pulse rates to intended states across long, event-free durations. The mood is calm and utilitarian, sold for relaxation, focus, meditation and sleep rather than active listening.

History

Brainwave music descends from Robert Monroe's Hemi-Sync research at the Monroe Institute and from New Age composer Steven Halpern's early entrainment experiments, and it became a defined commercial category in the 1990s and 2000s through Dr. Jeffrey Thompson's Center for Neuroacoustic Research, whose Brainwave Suite and Delta Sleep System systematized the approach, and Kelly Howell's Brain Sync line. iAwake Technologies and a wave of app developers extended the science-and-sound model, while YouTube channels made brainwave tracks ubiquitous. Though rooted in real EEG research and contested in its stronger claims, brainwave music became a dominant form of functional wellness audio in the streaming era.
