Pop-leaning male vocal groups built on clean stacked harmonies, choreographed staging and trading leads, but rooted in R&B phrasing and slow-jam ballads rather than rock or bubblegum. Smooth blended choruses, falsetto ad-libs and tight unison hooks over polished mid-tempo and ballad production aimed at crossover radio.

History

Assembled by managers and labels in the late 90s teen-pop boom, these groups grafted R&B vocal-group technique onto a marketable image. B2K and others extended the lineage into the early-2000s, while UK acts brought a soul-pop slant. The format faded as members went solo and ringtone-era solo R&B took over.
