Bouyon is Dominican high-energy dance music built from cadence-lypso, jing ping, lapo kabwit drum energy, chant, keyboards, drum machines, soca pressure and creole party hooks. It is raw, fast, repetitive and physical, made for carnival trucks, village fetes and sweaty crowds. Later bouyon and dennery-adjacent styles pushed the sound into even harder electronic loops and viral Caribbean party music.

History

WCK, short for Windward Caribbean Kulture, are widely credited with creating bouyon in Dominica by mixing local percussion traditions with cadence-lypso and modern band arrangements. Tracks such as "Conch Shell" and "Balance Batty" became regional markers. Triple Kay International, Asa Bantan and newer producers carried bouyon into the 2000s and 2020s, where digital distribution helped the sound circulate beyond Dominica.
