Blues Pop is pop-accessible music that still foregrounds blues feeling: guitar bends, blue notes, soulful phrasing, adult heartbreak, gospel lift or rootsy rhythm. It is smoother and more hook-driven than club blues, and often uses verse-chorus structures instead of strict blues forms. The tag is useful for songs that introduce mainstream listeners to blues colors without asking them to enter a specialist blues world.

History

B.B. King and Eric Clapton helped make blues sounds familiar to pop and rock audiences, while Bonnie Raitt and Robert Cray proved adult blues songs could work on mainstream radio. Later John Mayer, Gary Clark Jr., The Black Keys, Tracy Chapman and Alabama Shakes carried blues gestures into singer-songwriter, indie and rock-pop spaces. The result is one of blues' most commercially visible edges.
