Bluegrass is fast, tight, and rhythmically hard-driving, with banjo roll, mandolin chop, lead-fiddle lines, flatpicked guitar, and upright bass forming a precise acoustic engine. Vocals often feature the famous high-lonesome lead and closely stacked harmony.
History
Though rooted in older string-band and old-time traditions, bluegrass became a distinct form when Bill Monroe’s band style was sharpened by Earl Scruggs’s banjo approach and a more aggressive ensemble concept. Flatt & Scruggs, the Stanley Brothers, Jimmy Martin, Del McCoury, and Rhonda Vincent are among the artists who carried Monroe’s blueprint forward while keeping the core balance of drive, virtuosity, and song central.
