History
As music blogs (2DopeBoyz, Nah Right) and DatPiff replaced gatekeepers around 2007-08, unsigned artists built fan bases through free mixtapes. The XXL Freshman lists canonized the wave; its self-released, blog-fueled model trained the streaming-era playbook before social media and streaming absorbed the blogs themselves.
