Bitpop

Bitpop is chip music written as pop: verse-chorus hooks, vocals, bright synth leads, punk or indie-band energy, and 8-bit textures used as the main melodic color. It is less purist than hardware-only chiptune because guitars, live drums, soft synths, and vocal production can sit beside Game Boy or NES tones. The result is catchy, melodic, and often more song-facing than demoscene or tracker chip music.
History
Bitpop grew from 2000s chip scenes, indie rock, electroclash, and Japanese technopop revival. YMCK, Anamanaguchi, I Fight Dragons, Unicorn Kid, She, Slagsmålsklubben, Henry Homesweet, Sabrepulse, and early Crystal Castles showed that chip timbres could work in pop formats and club-adjacent songs. The lane later fed indie games, nerdcore-adjacent pop, hyperpop textures, and bright online electronic music.
