Belgian New Beat is slow, heavy, erotic, and mechanical dance music built from pitched-down EBM, acid house, industrial synths, body-music basslines, and deadpan vocal hooks. It moves at a lurch rather than a sprint. Compared with rave proper it is darker and more controlled, but its warehouse attitude and acid pulse helped prepare Europe for rave.
History
New Beat formed in Belgium around clubs, import shops, EBM records, and DJs slowing tracks down until they became stranger and heavier. A Split-Second's "Flesh" is often treated as ground zero, while Confetti's, Lords of Acid, The Maxx, Erotic Dissidents, Amnesia, Major Problem, Fatal Error, Code 61, 101, and Plaza defined the club and compilation canon. The scene burned brightly for only a few years, but its slower acid-industrial pressure fed techno, rave, EBM revival, and Belgian hardcore aesthetics.
