Fast, dense, regionally coded wordplay — 'game' talk, invented vocabulary — rides loose, soulful grooves distinct from L.A.'s glossier G-Funk sheen.

History

Built in Oakland, Vallejo and Richmond from the late '80s — Too Short's raw funk, Digital Underground's P-Funk theater and E-40's Click pioneered independent 'mobb music.' The scene thrived on hustle and regional pride through the '90s, spawning hyphy in the 2000s and continuing via P-Lo, G-Eazy and the surviving Bay institutions.
