Baton Rouge Blues is Louisiana electric blues stripped to essentials: clipped guitar, harmonica, no-nonsense rhythm section, and a loping beat that sounds relaxed until it has you completely trapped. It is cleaner and less piano-heavy than New Orleans styles, but more humid and groove-oriented than many Texas or Chicago equivalents.
History
Baton Rouge became the core production center for swamp blues under Jay Miller, whose recordings and regional distribution helped define a whole local blues dialect; Slim Harpo, Lightnin’ Slim, Lazy Lester, Tabby Thomas, Silas Hogan, and Guitar Gable are central here, and the city’s blues identity has remained strong enough that retrospective sets and festivals still present “Baton Rouge blues” as a coherent regional tradition rather than merely a swamp-blues footnote.
