The indie-dance crossover style named for its flared baggy jeans and loose-limbed groove: guitar bands welding funk, 60s psychedelia and house-derived beats into hip-swaying, drum-loop-driven pop. Wah guitars, breakbeat shuffle, melodic basslines and easygoing, druggy vocals make it sunnier and more pop-leaning than its Madchester parent.
History
An offshoot of Madchester that spread nationally circa 1989-91, baggy let indie kids dance. Liverpool's the Farm, Glasgow's Soup Dragons and London's Flowered Up adopted the loose grooves and Joe Bloggs flares, while Birmingham's Ocean Colour Scene began here. By 1992 the formula had thinned out and grunge and early Britpop displaced it.
