Backpack Rap

Backpack rap emphasizes lyricism, independent-minded taste, jazz-soul sample craft, and socially aware or introspective writing. The term can be used lovingly or teasingly, but the sound usually values bars and beats over flash.
History
The lane flowered in college circuits, indie rap labels, underground radio, and scenes around Rawkus, OKplayer, and backpacker identity more broadly. Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, Black Thought, DOOM, and Lupe Fiasco all articulated versions of a rap intelligence that rejected mindless commerciality without giving up style.
