The avant-garde wing of rock: polytonal, polyrhythmic, structurally bizarre music that scrambles blues-rock DNA with free jazz, atonality and through-composed weirdness. Lurching time signatures, croaked or shouted vocals, and deliberately misfingered instruments. Difficult by design, it prizes invention and disorientation over groove or melody.

History

Captain Beefheart's 1969 Trout Mask Replica is the foundational text—polyrhythmic Magic Band arrangements built from R&B, blues and free jazz. Frank Zappa's experiments and the European Rock in Opposition movement (Henry Cow, Univers Zero, late 70s) extended its through-composed, anti-commercial ethos into a lasting avant tradition.
