Avant-Prog is progressive rock pushed toward modern composition, chamber music, dissonance, irregular meter, political theater, extended forms, and difficult ensemble writing. Its sound often features bassoon, violin, clarinet, distorted guitar, electric piano, angular bass, sudden tempo changes, dark ostinatos, and vocals that may be theatrical or abstract. It differs from symphonic prog by favoring tension, asymmetry, and experiment over grand romantic sweep.
History
Avant-Prog grew from late-1960s progressive rock, Canterbury experimentation, European chamber music, free jazz, RIO, and underground political culture. Henry Cow established a rigorous British model, Univers Zero and Art Zoyd created dark chamber-rock, Thinking Plague and Present carried the complexity forward, Miriodor and Cheer-Accident brought North American and Canadian variations, and later groups such as Kayo Dot connected avant-prog to post-metal and chamber-noise. The style influenced brutal prog, math rock, experimental metal, chamber rock, and modern progressive scenes that value difficulty without nostalgia.
