Atmospheric Metal
Located in 1 route
Texture-driven metal that prizes immersive ambience over riff impact, fusing black-metal tremolo picking and blast beats with shoegaze haze, post-rock shimmer, and nature-evoking dynamics. Fast tremolo chords blur into a reverberant wall of sound; passages drift between blasting intensity and pastoral clean interludes (acoustic guitar, ambient synth, field recordings). Vocals span distant black-metal shrieks, ethereal cleans, and wordless melody buried in the mix. The mood is transcendent and melancholic - vast, hypnotic, often bittersweet - spanning Cascadian atmospheric black metal and the warmer, shoegaze-soaked blackgaze.
History
The style emerged as black metal turned inward: Norway's Ulver (Bergtatt, 1995) and Burzum's ambient leanings, plus Drudkh's Ukrainian epics, traded raw aggression for atmosphere. In the US Pacific Northwest, Wolves in the Throne Room (Two Hunters, 2007) and Agalloch (The Mantle, 2002) forged 'Cascadian' black metal steeped in ecology and folk. Concurrently in France, Alcest's Neige merged tremolo with shoegaze and dream-pop on Souvenirs d'un autre monde (2007), spawning blackgaze; Germany's Lantlôs and Sweden's Deafheaven followed, the latter's Sunbather (2013) on Deathwish drawing rare crossover acclaim. Bands like Saor, An Autumn for Crippled Children and Møl extend both wings, keeping immersion and emotional sweep central rather than metal's usual force.
