Cerebral, experimental punk that keeps the aggression but ditches the three-chord rulebook: angular dissonant guitars, jagged time signatures, dub and funk bass, art-school dada lyrics, and self-conscious avant-garde structures. Tense, twitchy, and intellectual, it pushes punk toward atonality, noise, and conceptual provocation rather than catharsis.

History

Emerged 1977-79 as art-school punks rejected formula: Wire's terse minimalism, Pere Ubu's industrial dread, Talking Heads' nervy funk. Closely tied to post-punk, it fed New York's no wave and the UK's experimental fringe, prizing ideas over speed and influencing decades of angular, intellectual guitar music.
