Pop as avant-garde art: unconventional structures, orchestral and electronic experimentation, conceptual lyrics and bold, theatrical vocal performance. It bends pop form toward the high-concept—string arrangements, found sound, irregular meters, striking visual identity—prioritizing artistic vision and sonic invention while keeping enough melody to remain, defiantly, pop.
History
Kate Bush's late-70s/80s experiments (notably 'Hounds of Love') set the auteur blueprint; Björk's 'Homogenic' fused orchestras with glitchy electronics in 1997. The 2010s revived the label around St. Vincent's jagged guitar pop and FKA twigs' fractured R&B, keeping art pop a home for conceptually ambitious, formally adventurous pop auteurs.
