Where noise rock meets art-school composition: alternate guitar tunings turned into harmonic systems, extended drones and feedback shaped into deliberate dissonant textures, and structures that swing between melody and pure abrasion. Cerebral and aggressive at once—chaos with a conceptual frame, the squall of noise rock organized by art-rock intent.

History

Centered on Sonic Youth (NYC, formed 1981), who took no-wave noise and Glenn Branca's tuning experiments into long-form art-rock songcraft on Daydream Nation (1988). Branca's and Rhys Chatham's guitar-orchestra works seeded the approach; Swans and later bands fused noise's violence with composed, gallery-minded ambition.
