Art Dance
Located in 1 route
Art Dance is danceable alternative music with a conceptual, performance-art, downtown, or avant-pop edge. It uses disco basslines, post-punk rhythm, electronics, repetition, spoken vocals, theatrical presentation, and unusual song structures while still inviting movement. The style often feels smarter, stranger, or more gallery-adjacent than ordinary indie dance.
History
The roots run through New York no wave, mutant disco, Talking Heads, Grace Jones, Arthur Russell, Laurie Anderson, ESG, and art-school post-punk. In the 2000s and 2010s, LCD Soundsystem, YACHT, Gang Gang Dance, Hercules and Love Affair, Planningtorock, Fever Ray, The Knife, and Hot Chip made conceptual dance music visible inside indie and electronic scenes. The lane survives wherever alternative artists treat the dance floor as a space for ideas, identity, and performance rather than only release.
