The anthem is the quintessential English-language sacred choral form: concise to medium-length, text-centered, and often built for church acoustics and liturgical placement. History
Developing in post-Reformation England as a vernacular counterpart to earlier Latin traditions, the anthem became central to Anglican worship through Tudor, Stuart, Georgian, Victorian, and modern cathedral music; composers from Gibbons, Purcell, and Handel to Parry, Stanford, Howells, Britten, and contemporary church musicians sustained it as a living national sacred genre.
