Spiky, rhythm-obsessed indie built on interlocking jagged guitar lines, staccato riffs, syncopated math-y rhythms and taut, danceable grooves. Borrowing Gang of Four's clipped attack, it favors sharp angles over smooth melody: choppy chords, intricate fretwork, restless drumming and tightly wound tension. Cerebral and twitchy yet built to move, it pairs nervous energy with dance-floor pulse.
History
Branched off the 2000s post-punk revival as bands sharpened the jagged, danceable guitar template. Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party set the angular standard mid-decade; Oxford's Foals folded in math-rock intricacy on 'Antidotes' (2008), and Two Door Cinema Club and Maps & Atlases pushed the bright, interlocking guitar approach into the 2010s indie scene.
