American Oi! translates British Oi! into U.S. street-punk and hardcore contexts: gang vocals, working-class pride, bootboy image, simple riffs and songs about loyalty, labor, local scenes and confrontation. It often hits harder than UK Oi!, with more hardcore weight and a more regional sense of identity. At its best, the style sounds like a bar-room chorus colliding with East Coast hardcore discipline.
History
Early U.S. skinhead and street-punk scenes took cues from Cock Sparrer, Sham 69 and The Business while mixing with hardcore. The Bruisers, Anti-Heros, The Templars, Dropkick Murphys, Patriot, The Ducky Boys, Those Unknown and Hudson Falcons helped define different American versions during the 1990s. The scene's politics varied sharply by city and band, so the most durable legacy is musical: chant hooks, street-level storytelling and a heavier American rhythmic punch.
