Ambient strings push the bowed ensemble toward cloud, shimmer, and halo rather than toward line-driven chamber rhetoric. Attack is softened, vibrato and close harmony are used for glow, and the music often unfolds as a slowly breathing field rather than as a tune-led piece.
History
The lane rose as producers and composers discovered that string ensembles could take on many of the functions of ambient pads while retaining tactile acoustic richness; in post-classical practice this produced a distinct substyle built less on piano hooks and more on suspended harmonic weather.
