Pop dissolved into ambient texture: looped wordless vocals, slow-blooming synth and organ drones, processed guitar shimmer and minimal percussion. Melodies surface and recede in tidal washes of reverb. Song structure loosens toward the meditative and hypnotic, foregrounding timbre, space and a weightless, devotional calm over verses and hooks.

History

The tag grew from late-1980s 4AD atmospherics and Brian Eno's ambient ethos, naming pop that mirrored ambient's hypnotic stillness. Cocteau Twins' 1990 Heaven or Las Vegas was a touchstone. It crystallized in the 2000s-2010s through Baltimore's Beach House and vocal-loop artists like Julianna Barwick and Grouper, who prized texture over traditional songform.
