Ambient is the main reference style: slowly evolving, atmosphere-first, often beatless, and built from timbre, space, and duration rather than hooks. It may be lush or austere, acoustic or electronic, but it typically avoids telegraphed climax and preserves a strong sense of environment.
History
Although antecedents stretch backward through minimalism, tape music, Satie, and environmental thinking, ambient as a named genre was crystallized by Eno in the mid-1970s and immediately diversified through artists who extended it into drone, space, textural, and environmental directions. By the 1990s it had become both a specialist listening culture and a production method that seeped into electronic, experimental, film, and wellness audio, making “ambient” one of the rare genre labels that now functions equally as art category, mood term, and everyday utility sound.
