Hard rock filtered through alt-rock sensibility: heavy, dynamic riffs paired with off-kilter song structures, dissonance, and emotional weight rather than party swagger. Loud-quiet contrasts, unconventional tunings, and a darker, more introspective edge. Crunch and power married to alternative's experimental, art-leaning instincts.

History

Grew from the early-90s alternative explosion, when guitar-heavy acts like Soundgarden and Jane's Addiction brought hard-rock muscle into the alt mainstream. Through the late 90s and 2000s, bands like Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age refined a heavy-yet-arty hybrid that ruled alternative radio. It kept hard rock credible to post-grunge audiences.
