History
Lorde's 2013 'Royals' detonated the template—sparse beats, big melodies, teenage candor. Billie Eilish and brother Finneas perfected the bedroom-built, hushed minimalism that defined the late 2010s. The lane became pop's default credible alternative, with Lizzy McAlpine, Gracie Abrams and others extending its intimate, anti-maximalist writing into the 2020s.
