Alt-Country Rock

Alt-country rock is the guitar-heavier wing of alt-country, with louder bands, indie or punk residue, and country melody embedded inside rougher rock structures. It often feels less like a genre compromise than like a bar fight where everybody unexpectedly knows the Carter Family catalog.

History

Emerging from the same early-1990s scene as alt-country, this strand emphasized electric urgency over acoustic intimacy. Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Drive-By Truckers, Old 97's, Whiskeytown, and others made country-rock feel scrappier, more literary, and less beholden to classic-rock niceness.
