Algorithmic Electronic is electronic music where rules, code, probability, generative systems, or formal procedures help determine the composition. It can be ambient, academic, club-oriented, modular, or installation-based, but the important idea is that the system composes with the artist. Patterns evolve, repeat, mutate, and surprise within constraints.
History
Algorithmic composition predates dance music through figures such as Iannis Xenakis, Lejaren Hiller, Laurie Spiegel, Brian Eno, and early computer-music labs. Later electronic artists connected algorithmic thinking to sequencers, trackers, Max/MSP, SuperCollider, modular systems, and generative game audio. Autechre, Alva Noto, Ryoji Ikeda, Mark Fell, Richard Devine, Holly Herndon, Oneohtrix Point Never, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, and Floating Points represent modern branches where process becomes audible.
