Afrobeats is the broad contemporary West African pop umbrella built from Nigerian and Ghanaian club music, hip-hop, R&B, dancehall, hiplife, house, amapiano, highlife traces and producer-driven digital grooves. The plural matters: it is not one rhythm but a flexible pop system. Melodies ride lightly over percussion, hooks are built for replay, and artists move easily between local slang, English, pidgin, Yoruba, Twi and global pop grammar.
History
Afrobeats emerged from Lagos, Accra, London diaspora circuits and online distribution as artists modernized hiplife, Naija pop and club sounds for radio and streaming. D'banj, 2Baba, P-Square and early Wizkid/Davido opened international lanes; Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Mr Eazi, Yemi Alade, Tems and Rema made the category a global industry language. It now overlaps with Afropop, Afro-fusion and chart pop.
