1970s African fusion of fuzz-guitar psychedelic rock with funk, Afrobeat and indigenous rhythm - Nigerian and Zambian 'Zamrock' especially. Heavy wah and distortion over polyrhythmic percussion, organ and tight grooves. Raw, hypnotic and funky, blending Hendrix and James Brown influence with local languages and West/Central African pulse.

History

Emerged across early-1970s Nigeria and Zambia as young bands absorbed Hendrix, Santana and funk. Fela Kuti's Afrobeat fed it; teenage band Ofege and BLO led Nigerian psych-rock, while Zambia's 'Zamrock' (Witch, Amanaz) thrived post-independence. Largely lost to economic collapse and AIDS, it was rediscovered via 2000s reissue labels like Now-Again.
