Afro-jazz rap blends rap delivery with African jazz, Afrobeat, highlife, and diasporic horn-writing traditions. It usually emphasizes live percussion, interlocking grooves, brass ensemble color, and a broader geographic rhythmic vocabulary than US-centric jazz rap, while still retaining jazz harmony or improvisational texture.
History
The style gained momentum as artists from Africa and the diaspora fused jazz-trained musicianship, Afrobeat-derived rhythm, and socially charged rap. Blitz the Ambassador, Sampa the Great, Akua Naru, Baloji, M.anifest, and related artists showed that jazz rap's future was not confined to old US sample maps; it could travel through Lusaka, Accra, Kinshasa, London, and Brooklyn without losing its center of gravity.
