Afro House is house music rooted in African percussion, vocal phrasing, bass movement, and local dance cultures, with South Africa as one of its most influential centers. It is broad enough to include deep, tribal, soulful, ancestral, and tech-leaning forms, but the common feel is groove-first and rhythmically grounded. Compared with standard global house, Afro house often lets percussion and vocal call-and-response carry the drama rather than relying only on chords, drops, or pop choruses.
History
Afro house grew from African club scenes, South African kwaito and house, and diaspora labels that connected Yoruba, ancestral, and deep-house traditions. Black Coffee's international breakthrough made the term globally visible, while Culoe De Song, Black Motion, Boddhi Satva, Osunlade, Da Capo, Enoo Napa, Shimza, and many others deepened the vocabulary. In the 2020s, Afro house became one of the most important international club languages, feeding festivals, Ibiza, melodic house, amapiano hybrids, and pop collaborations.
