Afro Hip-Hop is hip-hop made through African pop, street and diaspora vocabularies: rap verses over Afrobeats, hiplife, azonto, bongo flava, kwaito, amapiano, highlife, dancehall, trap or local-language production. It is broader and more pop-facing than Afro-boom-bap. The style can be hard, melodic, political or celebratory, but it treats African rhythm and language as the center rather than an exotic add-on.
History
African hip-hop scenes grew locally from the 1980s onward, while 2000s and 2010s Afrobeats, hiplife, South African hip-hop, Ghanaian rap, Nigerian rap and East African scenes brought the music into wider circulation. Artists such as M.I Abaga, Sarkodie, Nasty C, Cassper Nyovest, Olamide, Falz, Khaligraph Jones and Sho Madjozi represent different regions and flows. Afro hip-hop keeps evolving as African pop becomes globally influential and rap remains a flexible local language.
