Afro-Fusion is a flexible African pop label for artists blending Afrobeats, highlife, dancehall, hip-hop, R&B, reggae, house, soul and regional African rhythms. It often signals breadth rather than one precise beat. The term became especially useful for Nigerian and diaspora artists whose music moved beyond a single Afrobeats template, carrying African language, rhythm and identity into global pop structures.

History

African fusion long predates the label, from highlife and Afrobeat to soukous, mbaqanga and Afro-rock. In the 2010s, artists such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Mr Eazi, Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Tems and Amaarae made hybrid African pop a global streaming language. Afro-fusion became a way to claim African roots while refusing narrow genre boxes, especially as collaborations with R&B, hip-hop and dancehall multiplied.
