Pop that braids West African Afrobeats with Caribbean soca in one groove: Afro log-drum and shaker patterns laced through soca lift, dancehall bounce and calypso warmth. Polyrhythmic percussion, mellow offbeat bass, patois-and-pidgin toplines, sun-bright synths. Diasporic and danceable, bridging Lagos, Accra and Port of Spain.

History

Coined "afrosoca" around Trinidad's 2016 Carnival, the blend fused groovy soca with surging Afrobeats. Olatunji's "Oh Yay" named the sound, while Fay-Ann Lyons' Ghana-linked "Block the Road" cut a 50/50 hybrid. Calypso Rose's 2016 "Leave Me Alone" globalized calypso crossover, and Kes and Nailah Blackman pushed Afrobeats-tinged soca into a warm-weather pop lane through the 2020s.
