Adult Contemporary Country

Adult contemporary country is soft-edged and meticulously tasteful: mellow drums, electric piano or synth pads, silken harmonies, and midtempo pacing that avoids both honky-tonk grit and rock aggression. Vocals are smooth and centered, built for commute-time radio and soft-lamp introspection.

History

This lane grew out of countrypolitan's softening of hard country and met the adult-contemporary boom head-on. Ronnie Milsap, Anne Murray, Crystal Gayle, Dan Seals, Restless Heart, and early soft-pop country acts turned country into a format people could play at dinner without knocking over the salad bowl.
