Adult Contemporary
Located in 1 route
Adult Contemporary favors midtempo drums, polished keyboards, soft guitar, and lead vocals that read intimate and technically assured rather than raw or aggressive. Ballads and tender midtempo songs dominate, with glossy choruses, clean studio sheen, and a mood designed for broad adult-radio comfort.
History
The style took shape as easy-listening and MOR radio absorbed 1970s singer-songwriters and softened pop-rock, then fully consolidated when the chart and format language shifted toward “adult contemporary”; by the 1980s and 1990s acts such as Phil Collins, Chicago, Richard Marx, Michael Bolton, Whitney Houston, and Céline Dion turned it into one of the most reliable engines of mainstream adult radio, and its template later fed both Hot AC and wedding-ballad pop.
