Acoustic Roots Blues centers guitar, voice, foot rhythm, harmonica, banjo or small unplugged ensembles rather than electric-band volume. It draws from Delta blues, Piedmont blues, gospel, field hollers, ragtime, folk ballads and modern roots songwriting. The style can be historically reverent or newly written, but it usually prizes touch, lyric clarity, groove and the feeling that one performer can carry an entire world.

History

Prewar artists such as Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Willie McTell, Charley Patton and Son House shaped the acoustic vocabulary before urban electric blues became dominant. The folk revival returned many older players to public stages and inspired later musicians to study fingerpicking, slide and songster repertoires. Modern artists including Keb' Mo', Eric Bibb, Corey Harris, Guy Davis and Rory Block keep the acoustic blues line moving.
