Stripped, organic R&B foregrounding live guitar, upright or warm electric bass, real keys and brushed or hand drums, with minimal programming. Vocals sit close and unmasked over earthy, breathing arrangements. The feel is unplugged and conversational, prioritizing songcraft, tone and vocal nuance over production gloss or heavy low end.
History
Flourished in the late 2010s as artists and tastemakers (NPR's Tiny Desk, COLORS) rewarded sparse, live-feeling R&B. Daniel Caesar's guitar-anchored ballads, H.E.R.'s acoustic sets and Tiana Major9's warm intimacy framed the lane, recasting modern R&B writing in unplugged, woodsy textures rather than electronic ones.
