Acoustic Neo-Soul is neo-soul stripped toward wood, breath and close-mic intimacy: acoustic guitar, Rhodes or piano, hand percussion, live bass, conversational vocals and songs that feel like they could survive in a living room. It keeps neo-soul's jazz, gospel and hip-hop awareness, but softens the beat into a singer-songwriter frame. The style works best when the performance sounds personal without becoming small.
History
India.Arie, Lauryn Hill, Musiq Soulchild, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and D'Angelo made organic soul central in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Later artists such as Lianne La Havas, Corinne Bailey Rae, H.E.R., Daniel Caesar and Cleo Sol refreshed the acoustic branch for streaming-era listeners. The style became a bridge between R&B, folk-soul and coffeehouse singer-songwriter culture without losing Black vocal and harmonic roots.
