Grunge's stripped, unplugged side: fingerpicked or strummed acoustic guitars, cello and mandolin textures, and intimate, weary vocals carrying the same melancholy and addiction-haunted lyrics. The heaviness turns inward, trading distortion for hushed dynamics and aching melody. Sparse, autumnal arrangements that bare the songwriting beneath the fuzz.

History

Pioneered by Alice in Chains' acoustic EPs Sap (1992) and the chart-topping Jar of Flies (1994), with Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley's harmonies front and center. Nirvana's MTV Unplugged in New York (1994), Pearl Jam ballads, and Mad Season's Above (1995) cemented the mode, proving grunge's songcraft survived unplugged and intimate.
