Acid Techno is techno built around the Roland TB-303's squelching, resonant bassline, usually faster and tougher than Chicago acid house. Tracks ride hypnotic 303 sequences, hard kicks, compressed rides, and stripped breakdowns that twist cutoff and resonance until the riff feels physically unstable. The sound can be psychedelic, warehouse-raw, or punky free-party music, but the acid line is always the lead instrument.
History
The style grew from late-1980s acid house and early-1990s European techno, then became a defining language for labels and crews such as Stay Up Forever, Smitten, Routemaster, Harthouse, and X-Trax. Hardfloor and Emmanuel Top made canonical European acid techno records, while Josh Wink and DJ Misjah & DJ Tim gave the sound international club anthems. London's squat-party and free-party networks hardened it through Chris Liberator, D.A.V.E. The Drummer, The Geezer, and related producers, and the 303 revival keeps acid techno current in modern hard-techno sets.
