Acid Breaks is breaks music driven by squelching 303-style acid lines, rave stabs, and broken drum pressure. It sits between acid house, big beat, early nu skool breaks, and late-1990s U.K. club breaks: less straight than acid house, less rock-facing than big beat, and more psychedelic than many funk breaks records. The sound is usually DJ-functional, with long bassline modulations, filter movement, and kick-snare breaks designed to make an acid riff feel more unstable and physical.
History
Rennie Pilgrem and the Thursday Club/TCR orbit were central to the U.K. acid-breaks strain, especially through "A Place Called Acid" and later Thursday Club Recordings releases. Plump DJs, Fatboy Slim, Lee Coombs, Koma & Bones, Meat Katie, and Elite Force pushed acid or acid-adjacent riffs into heavier breakbeat sets. The style never became a separate mass-market scene, but it remains a durable flavor within old-school breaks, festival rave nostalgia, and modern acid-breakbeat revivals.
