History

After 'Rapper's Delight' (1979) proved rap could sell, labels like Sugar Hill, Enjoy and Profile flooded the early '80s with 12-inch singles. Drum machines replaced live disco bands; Run-DMC's 1983 minimalism sharpened the template. The era's NY-centric sound defined what later fans simply called 'old school' before the golden age arrived.
