The glossy, high-gain MTV-era sound: bright chorused-and-flanged guitars, gated reverb drums, screaming melodic leads, and big multi-tracked gang-vocal choruses. Polished production, fist-in-the-air hooks, and party-anthem energy. Slicker and more melodic than the 70s, built for radio rotation and stadium singalongs.

History

Defined the decade's commercial rock as Van Halen, Def Leppard, and Bon Jovi fused hard-rock crunch with pop melodicism and MTV-ready production. The Sunset Strip and transatlantic radio drove a melodic, hook-saturated boom that dominated charts until grunge upended it around 1991. It remains shorthand for big-budget, big-chorus arena hard rock.
